MONSID mentioned in article on Autonomous Systems published by the National Academies

Updated: Feb 8, 2021

Okean Solutions’ MONSID technology was mentioned as an example of system health monitoring software in Enabling and Enhancing Astrophysical Observations with Autonomous Systems, a research paper published the Decadal Survey on Astronomy and Astrophysics 2020 (Astro2020) by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine.

Okean Solutions’ Ksenia Kolcio was one of the authors of the paper. A brief summary follows:

Autonomy is desirable for a variety of current technologies because it allows the system to complete its job without requiring external assistance. Increasing autonomy will be even more important for future technologies for several reasons. Some systems are comprised of multiple interoperating sub-systems requiring controls that are difficult to achieve with human intervention only. For remote systems in space, earth-based control would be unwieldy due to very long communication delays.

When a system can make decisions quickly and dynamically, the resulting benefits can include faster restoration of functionality, improved efficiency and better coordination of limited resources, greater access to system time by researchers, gathering of data that is more in-depth, and fewer data gaps due to downtime.

System health monitoring can be used to identify potentially faulty components and to support taking action to reduce risks. Examples of technologies, including MONSID, are cited along with recommendations for adoption of more autonomous systems.
